Guise of Plants: Poems on “The Mind of Plants” by Peter Larkin

Guise of Plants: Poems on “The Mind of Plants” by Peter Larkin

Below you will find a series of inspiring poems created by Peter Larkin and his interpretation of the beautiful plants mentioned in The Mind of Plants: Narratives of Vegetal Intelligence. A British poet known for his striking and powerful poems about trees, Larkin’s poems are rich with vivid imagery, as well as speaking to the intricate relationships between these magnificent organisms and the ecosystems they inhabit.

A note from Peter Larkin:

For John C. Ryan, with gratitude and admiration

Note: these poems are drawn in large part from The Mind of Plants: Narratives of Vegetal Intelligence, edited by John C. Ryan, Monica Gagliano, and Patricia Vieira (2021). Enormous thanks to and appreciation of the contributors whose striking materials I have snaked my textual links through to find some fresh patterns of original dependence. I have limited myself to plants I have actually encountered.

Passionflower

Finish-lines, margins
were haunted by how
dreams recall waking,
passions of a plant
matching the dazzles of us

apostolic symmetries the
entrance to a crown of form,
filaments declare no
further floral storm

searching for a stem
will traverse this sill
of witness, symbol
at its own expanse,
palmate luminals

lurching true from anthropo-
genic turbulence, diagnosed
(prophesised) as no dis-
entanglement

                these are tracings
of a diet of calm the plant
invokes, no further chiding
than the facilitator it gives,
practitioner of a tendril
to scent a cosmology

sprouting a sacral to its
own fuse, a conduit between
adjacent destinations, rolls
its thoughts of new to the
range, prayerful vine
in exchange

Rose

Roses thrown here as
much as any other place,
crisp whenever spring
earns the intervention

attar of genetic pose, how
to get the lost scent back?
no heed of a substitute
blue, instead convey paler
colour-clues sub rosa

insisting on ubiquity al-
most undoes the vegetal
metaphor until an everywhere
incarnadines the symbol

draws in blood and marks
the blotch on cutting leaves, a
naked stem from the knife

being pricked to the pick of
it, a plant drily reduces to
flowering for altered purposes,
design-accretions of appreciation

aids the rose to cling onto
structures, pictures, buds
reported patent blossoming

always a curtaining rose
beside the death of a heath

Bean

Bean-like the use of
signals and sufficient
interrogation, social
stimuli on all solitary
lobes

          pass many lives
crossing from seed to
plant, lacing the text-
ures of moistening,
bean grain speculates,
remembers, the entire
plant, charged with a
membrane resting
potential

                self-
propagable, stimulate
every next cell, at the
transient switch release
persistent action
occasionals

                what is
all-tellable of this plant’s
cognition surfaces, narrative
of an interior arises from
scolding the patches and scrapes

                  and say what
microscopic ritual at the mind
of beans, present complex
oscillatory instances, retain
an overlapped, crusts,
cyto-memories
                        green mind
for green sessile admission,
retakes stasis in its local
guise, transition abounds
through circulating veins
of mud and air

Apple

The gift of young graft
in the garden of philosophers,
themes a spare attentiveness
in rows of care, insightful
decay, home, stalking
many grounds since

ritualize conversion to tree-
minding, guided exchange,
co-visible network stances
trying beforehand to prove
embodied expectation

no way to flail the soil
at being a true apple,
appraising a fathomable
equity, fractal displays
of a life in shape

Review of Social Forestry by Kirkus Reviews

Review of Social Forestry by Kirkus Reviews

“Vaarde delivers a guide to forging reciprocal, regenerative relationships between nature and communities.

The author has been advising farms, stewarding forests, and teaching environmental sciences for more than 50 years since earning degrees in forestry and systematic botany from Syracuse University and SUNY College of Forestry. Vaarde’s book is a collection of data, prose, poems, photographs, drawings, and posters that explain the philosophies of social forestry and land ethics. Forests and bodies of water are often considered as essential only in relation to their benefits to human beings; the author challenges that idea by connecting nature to communities and emphasizing nature’s; forestry work and ecology; cultures of place (shared values, belief systems, or ways of life within a specific geographical region); and visioning (picturing what one wants to happen and how a story might unfold). Vaarde recognizes that reading does not replace action when comes to environmentalism: “This book is not merely a recipe collection, where the reader can pick and choose their indulgences; rather, we want to suggest that all skills and opportunities are embedded in cultural contexts that shape action and involvement in complex ways that a book cannot fully enfold.” The author encourages conservation efforts, forest management, local food production, and the promotion of environmental resiliency, among other practices, and includes myths, anecdotes, and lessons from many North American Indigenous communities’ customs and traditions. The book is brimming with well-researched information on every aspect of social forestry—readers should be warned that a surfeit of data and academic jargon can make it read like a textbook. Despite that, Vaarde does their due diligence to honor the traditional wisdom of communities and help human beings live in harmony with their surroundings. The book is a must-read for anyone curious to learn more about ethical land practices.

A complex and informative all-in-one manual on social forestry.”

Queering Psychedelics Author Talk in NYC

Queering Psychedelics Author Talk in NYC

THURSDAY, MAY 11, 2023, 5:30 PM EST

Queering Psychedelics Author Talk at Bluestockings Cooperative NYC

Come out for the east coast book launch event of Queering Psychedelics: From Oppression to Liberation in Psychedelic Medicine. Join fellow lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer folx and allies in New York City to celebrate, featuring short talks from local experts on LGBTQIA+ issues in psychedelic practice: Alex Belser, PhD, Dee Dee Goldpaugh, LCSW, and Behike Sensei Kevon Simpson. Dr. Julie Holland says: “These shining stars and psychonauts are taking down heteronorms, homophobia, transphobia and plain old sexism. Here’s to liberation for all!”

In its 38 essays, covering topics of consent, privilege, intersectionality and identity, Queering Psychedelics grapples with how modern psychedelic research might address the unique needs and traumas of sexual and gender minorities—people that often suffer from challenging mental health conditions brought on by social exclusion, pathologization, criminalization, and stigmatization. This book delves into the dark history of psychedelic conversion therapy, illuminates promising psychedelic research in queer communities, and looks toward the queer contributions and leadership in psychedelic practice. This book interrogates the continuing radical potential of queer psychedelia in today’s era of assimilation, paving the way for an inclusive and intersectional world.

The event will take place at 116 Suffolk Street at Bluestockings Cooperative. The space is wheelchair accessible. Masks are required to enter the bookstore and during the entirety of the event.

Income-based sliding scale ticketing: If you are someone who identifies as having little to no income, please feel free to RSVP to our event for free. If you are someone who identifies as having disposable or generational income, please pay as close to full price for our event as you can.
